“Put your own oxygen mask on first.”
Taking care of yourself, both mentally and physically, is a vital part of music teacher well-being. Taking breaks throughout the day and practicing mindfulness will help your mind, but if you are not taking care of your body, it won’t be enough. We rely on our bodies for so much as music teachers: singing, playing instruments, conducting, movement activities, and more.
Taking care of your body includes:
- Getting enough sleep
- Exercising regularly
- Proper nutrition
- Proper hydration
As music teachers, we also have to think about taking care of our voices, and our hearing. Following guidelines for vocal health and hearing protection can help ensure we maintain long, successful careers as music teachers.
